Roundup of Porsche Sound Night 2013

This year it's been the third installation of the Porsche Sound Night as part of the exhibition at Porschemuseum. The hosts were Eve Scheer and Dieter Landenberger. Eve Scheer is an actress and professional host with experience in racing. She drove in the Alfa-147-Cup series in 2004, as well as at the 24-Hours of Nürburgring and some other series like the Mini Challenge. She also pilots a Porsche 997 GT3 Cup in the Porsche Sports Cup with Steffi Halm. Dieter Landenberger is the Head of the Historical Archive at Porsche with a vast knowledge of Porsche history.

I couldn't find that much of official material to share with you, but fortunately YouTube user Vinz Z has uploaded about a dozen videos himself. For example the sound of the Porsche 935/78 "Moby Dick" 1978:

Official Trailer Porsche Sound Night 2013 (Porsche Soundnacht 2013)

Porsche Motorsport history has become a permanent feature in the Porsche Museum's calendar of events: for the third time, guests of the "Sound Night" were able to listen to the sounds of Porsche racing vehicle engines live in the Porsche Museum. Racing drivers, engineers and mechanics were guests of this event and shared their expert knowledge and stories behind several treasured racing vehicles.
Stay tuned with more events of the Porsche Museum and visit:http://www.porsche.com/international/aboutporsche/porschemuseum/

Here are some more videos

YouTuber Matthias Kierse has put three videos online from the second part of the evening: Porsche 904/8 Carrera GTS (Schäffer/Mezger).

30 Shots You Have to Drink Until 2014

You have 30 nights left until 2014 and The Roosevelts created an infographic almost a year ago that perfectly fits todays date. Here are 30 different shot receipts - drink one different each night and you'll have a great story to tell on new years eve.

This would also make a good start for a "drink around the world" drinking game. There are some of the greatest shots ever along with some of the most classic drink shots ever. Shots like the Kamikaze, the B-52 and the Orgasm are standards in nearly every bar I ever went to in Germany and may be the reason for some really great party nights. And some really bad hangovers, too.

Anyway it's a fun list and drinking inspiration nonetheless. So grab some friends or family, mix your shots and have fun on any christmas party along the way to your new years eve party.

Please leave me a comment if you succeed drinking them all!

5 Minutes of Awesome Bike Skills: Danny MacAskill - Imaginate

Two years in the making, street trials rider Danny MacAskill releases his brand new riding film. Once again he doesn't fail to deliver and sets the bar very high for others to follow.

My mind is blown again! The support of Red Bull shure helped him improve on the setup and idea of the film.

Again, great work from my favorite biker.

Why The First 20 Hours Are The Most Important When Learing Anything

Josh Kaufman specializes in teaching people from all walks of life how to master practical knowledge and skills. In his 20-minute TEDx Talk, he shares how having his first child inspired him to approach learning in a whole new way. He also reveals the four steps to learning any new skill, fast.

He wrote a new book about this topic called The First 20 Hours.

Here's a breakdown of his four steps (as found via Lifehacker):
  1. Deconstruct the skill: It starts with breaking down the task in several parts and find the most important things to practice first. If you were learning to play a musical instrument, for example, knowing just a few chords gives you access to tons of songs. If you want to learn a new language, learn the most common 2,000 words and you'll have 80% text coverage.
  2. Lern enough to self-correct: Use reference materials to learn enough that you know when you make a mistake so you can correct yourself.
  3. Remove barriers to learning: Identify and remove anything that distracts you from focusing on the skill you want to learn.
  4. Practice at least 20 hours.

My Favorite Tudor Watch From Baselworld 2013 - The Heritage Chrono Blue (Watch Wednesday)

One of the few watches that where introduced during this years Baselworld and that I really liked is the Tudor Heritage Chrono Blue (Ref. 70330B). It is heavily inspired by the iconic 1973 Tudor "Montecarlo" (Ref. 7169) and cites many details of its predecessor.

Tudor Heritage Chrono Blue
Tudor Heritage Chrono Blue with Nylon strap and steel bracelet - (c) Tudor

I like both versions with steel bracelet or with a nylon strap in blue, grey and orange - colors that match the watchface and give a hint of mediterranean flair.

Nonetheless it isn't just another version of  the Heritage line introduce by Tudor in 2010 (which is very successful so far). This is a completely new watch by itself. It differs from the other Heritage models especially in the hour markers filled with SuperLuminova, the form of the hands and the bi-directional bezel.

Tudor Heritage Chrono Blue - Superluminova

The dial sports two counters 3 and 9 o’clock for the small seconds hand and for a 45-minute counter.
The sapphire crystal keeps a self-winding mechanical ETA2892 movement with a Dubois-Dépraz-module and 42-hour power reserve. The bezel has a blue aluminium finish, while crown and pushers are knurled with a chrome finish. Additionally the crown features a blue lacquered shield.

Tudor Montecarlo and Tudor Heritage Chrono Blue

It comes with a retail price of 4'200 CHF / 3.480 EUR / 4,350 USD.

This comes in perfect timing with the return of Tudor to the US market in September 2013. It should be available in both select Rolex boutiques as well as third-party watch retailers.

Technical specifications:

  • Reference: 70330B
  • Movement: ETA 2892 automatic movement with Dubois-Dépraz chronograph module, 55 jewels, 28,800 beats/hour

Hilarious, Fascinating, Dramatic - The Story of Nile Rodgers and Chic

There might be no better opening quote than this:
You probably don't know my name, but I bet you know at least one of my songs.
It is Nile Rodgers, the man behind Chic and many other great productions, who introduces himself in the BBC documentary "The Hitmaker". And from there it just goes off. Watch the fascinating story of his life, hilarious background stories of some of the best selling records of all time and the tragedy of the last concert with his legendary partner Bernard Edwards.

Nile was the guitar player of Bernard and Bernard was the bass player of Nile. And both together changed the world of music a few times over the course of about 20 years. Bernard Edwards died on April 18th 1996 in Tokyo after a fabulous comeback concert with Chic.

This year Nile Rodgers was named JT Superproducer of the Year in Japan  and was invited to perform at The Budokan. Just before the concert in Tokyo, Edwards fell ill and was advised to not polay the concert and go to a hospital immediately. But despite Rodgers' insistence, he refused to cancel the gig. He managed to perform a great gig, but had to be helped at times.
After the concert he retired to his hotel room where he was later found dead by Rodgers. Bernard died of pneomonia.

You can watch the full documentary here: http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/ZQz4mIjykN8

This is a kind of follow-up post to 6 Lessons You Can Learn From The Story of Disco that I published some weeks ago.

There are more stories to be told by Nile Rodgers. As I said, really hilarious stuff.

Here are the liner notes to the BBC documentary from YouTube

Nile Rodgers has sold over 100 million records. He helped define the sound of the '70s, as disco took the world by storm. Nile and musical partner Bernard Edwards captured the essence of New York's iconic Studio 54 creating hits like Dance Dance Dance, Le Freak and Good Times for Chic and We Are Family and Lost In Music for struggling vocal group Sister Sledge. But the music that had made Chic would also break them, thanks to the 'Disco Sucks' backlash. What could have been the end for Nile Rodgers would actually be a new beginning as a producer, helping create some of the biggest hits of the 80s for the likes of Diana Ross, David Bowie, Madonna and Duran Duran.

In this profile documentary, the ever-charismatic Rodgers contributes an engaging and often frank interview to tell the tale of how, born to Beatnik, heroin-addict parents in New York, he picked up a guitar as a teenager and embarked on a journey to learn his craft as a musician, before becoming one of disco's most successful artists

In the '70s and '80s he lived the party lifestyle thanks to his success with Chic and as one of the music industry's hottest producers. Drugs and alcohol would become part of everyday life for Nile, contributing in part to the break up of Chic in the early '80s. The band would reform in the mid '90s, but their return was quickly marked by tragedy with the death of Nile's long-time friend and musical partner, Bernard Edwards in 1996.

Then in 2010 Nile was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of prostate cancer, which last year he announced he had beaten. In spite of, or perhaps because of this, Nile's talent and ambition remains undimmed, deservedly earning himself the title of hardest-working man in pop, with Chic's seemingly inexhaustible live performance schedule.

Nile Rodgers: The Hitmaker recounts a captivating and moving story of a man who has created some of the most sparkling and ebullient pop music ever recorded.

Contributors include: Nile Rodgers' fellow Chic members, singers Norma Jean, Alfa Anderson and Fonzi Thornton and keyboard player Rob Sabino, as well as recording engineers Bob Clearmountain and Robert Drake.

Other artists Nile has worked with talk passionately about his talents, including Sister Sledge's Kathy Sledge, Bryan Ferry, Steve Winwood, Johnny Marr, La Roux's Elly Jackson, Valerie Simpson, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein from Blondie and Duran Duran's John Taylor.

His latest collaboration happens to be the upcoming and highly anticipated album of Daft Punk.

If you're more into books, I can also strongly recommend his autobiography Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco and Destiny.

Everything You Need To Know About Beer-Making In 5 Minutes

Can You Teach Your Boss How To Dance?

Do you work in an company environment where it is possible that you teach your boss how to dance?
If you are not, then at least take a look at California Conservation Corps members Antwon McCoy and Leonard Patton who managed to do so:

Here's what they say about the video:

California Conservation Corps members Antwon McCoy and Leonard Patton aren't just hard workers. They are also very good dancers who have taught their big nature nerd/mountain man boss (John Griffith) more than a few dance moves (song is Ay Ladies by Travis Porter).

When they aren't busting moves, all three do a lot of trail building, salmon habitat restoration, and tree planting in the CCC. John Griffith is also the author of a fast-paced, multicultural eco-fantasy novel for readers ten and up titled "Totem Magic: Going MAD." (TotemMagic.com).

6 Lessons You Can Learn From The Story of Disco

In the must see documentary "Unsung" about the story of Disco, there are some hidden lessons that can be applied on everyday life, wether you are an entrepeneur starting up a new business or just searching for some inspiration.

So what did I learn?

I discovered some main points while watching the history of Disco and it's biggest stars.

  1. Often enough innovation happens by accident. Let it happen. Don't be afraid to break things.
  2. Don't let failure stop you from doing what you like the most or what you're the most skilled in.
  3. The greatest success comes organically and this can't be planned.
  4. Sneak in through the backdoor to get a second chance, if you know you have a killer idea, product or service.
  5. Create an environment where you can be free and express yourself.
  6. Don't be afraid to try something new.

Would you agree with that? Please let me know in the comments!

There is another fantastic documentary about the Disco phenomena called "Disco: Spinning the Story" (2005), hosted by no other than The Queen of Disco Gloria Gaynor.

You can watch it in seperate parts on YouTube:

Here's the connection between both documentaries and the points I make

If you can't watch everything, then just watch Part 3 of the series. It is really stunning what features Tom Moulton discovered just by accident.
And I know from many people, many books I've read (mainly (auto)biographies), many documentaries, talks and interviews that this kind of development and evolution happened constantly during the history of music. Especially with the introduction of new technology and people making errors or misusing it on purpose and then letting these failures evolve into something new and unique.

Here's what IMDB says:

Hosted by the one and only Disco Diva, Gloria Gaynor, "Disco: Spinning the Story" takes a comprehensive look at the evolution of the music that defined the 70's. From the recording studios to the dance floors, "Disco: Spinning the Story" examines the phenomenon in a way it has never been told before. Hear funk pioneer George Clinton, Donna Summer producer Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers of Chic, Earl Young of the Trammps, hip-hop icon Kurtis Blow, remix legend Tom Moulton, "Saturday Night Fever" actress, Karen Lynn Gorney and even Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead talk about the roots of Disco, how it emerged, and how it has influenced music ever since. Included are vintage performance highlights from Donna Summer, KC & The Sunshine Band, Bee Gees, Chic, Gloria Gaynor, Rose Royce, Labelle, Hues Corporation and many more.

Global Roll-Out of Jack Daniel's Sinatra Select Starts March 2013

This is an update to my most popular post so far Buy Jack Daniel's New Sinatra Select Next Month (December).

Global Release starts March 1st, 2013

The Spirit Business reports that the global roll-out of the heavily sought after Limited Edition starts now across the globe. The blend of Tennessee whiskey was initially launched back in October 2012 in Cannes and was available only in travel retail of the Las Vegas Airport since. As of today, the spirit is made available in several other US airports and some others worldwide.

It is also already available in a number of airports around the world, such as Frankfurt, Hamburg, London, Milan, the Netherlands, Dubai, Singapore, Warsaw and Moscow. It is expected that many more airports will have bottles available in March 2013.

The director of PR at Brown-Forman (brand owner of Jack Daniel's), Rick Bubenhofer said Sinatra Select will be available in most US airports by May 2013.

He also said:

It is available in a number of US airports now, to include Atlanta, LAX, San Francisco, JFK and Miami. We are considering other channels like US Military, high-end cruise ships and duty free airline catalogs as well. Domestically, it will be available at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in mid-March.

About Jack Daniel's Sinatra Select Limited Edition

The Limited Edition has been aged in special Sinatra barrels and pays tribute to this one legacy drinker with a special edition 90-proof bottle. The one-liter bottle includes a specially designed gift box featuring a booklet about the shared history of Jack Daniel’s and Frank Sinatra.

The barrels have carved grooves on their interior to expose the spirit to more wood and are hand-selected by Master Distiller Jeff Arnett. He used these to get a fuller flavor and darker color, then mingled with classic Old No. 7 to result in a drink with a smooth, bold character. It's the first time Jack Daniel's is using this method as the main component of a blend. The goal is to get a faster-maturing whiskey with more noticeable spicy and smoky flavours and a richer character.

Please let us know about your experience, if you had the pleasure to get your hands and tongues on a bottle of this fine drink!

Inside Koenigsegg - The Future Of The Internal Combustion Engine

It has been tested for the last two years and the car has done 60,000 kilometers so far.

Spend an Hour With Jean-Claude Biver of Hublot Watches (Watch Wednesday)

"I did a lot in my life, just because I got a lot of help."  Jean-Claude Biver

The term CEO brings to mind images of numbers and seriousness. But the key point of Jean-Claude Biver's talk on January 17th at Foment de les Arts i del Disseny (FAD) for European University was an unexpected topic: Love.

The event was part of a series of seminars for the Design Management degree offered by European University. Within the watch industry, Jean-Claude Biver has the status of a living legend. It seems that nearly everyon at least nows his name and that he is important. He has been with Hublot since 2004.

This speech is a very rare piece. You can watch Jean-Claude Biver speak very personally, passionately and honest. He talks about his life, love, religion, the watch industry and doing things he didn't want to do. He shows how to use your own passion to create new ideas and a lot of new things.

It is thrilling and interesting to hear and watch a person in such a position give that kind of talk. You get a sense of the character of the Swiss watch industry and why Biver is considered so important. He is subject of some educational sessions of the European University.

EVO Did 2000 Miles of Daily Business in a Ferrari FF

Harry Metcalfe of EVO finds out how the Ferrari FF can stand his daily business dutys. How does it feel living with one for two weeks and 2000 miles. He even managed to drive it to some mild off-roading and going on a trip to France with four people packed in the car.

The all-wheel drive FF with 660-horsepower "... could use more ground clearance," he says, "but that's an option on this car.". He needs that as a part of his daily routine.

What he didn't like so much were the (many) buttons on the steering wheel.

See for yourself in the next 17 minutes.

How Not To Get Your Watch Stolen

Some of you might have been ripped of your wallet, phone, watch or something else whilst visiting an overcrowded christmas market, a shopping mall, concert, festival or a conference you've attended.

It's an embarresment but unfortunateley it seems that there's no cure for that. At least unless you get to know some of the human attention flaws a thief or pickpocket might have exploited on you.

So it is important to know how it is all done. The expert pickpocket Apollo Robbins can teach you a lot about this. He calls himself The Gentleman Thief as he always will immediately return what he has just stolen from you. I mean, right now, Wait, where's my watch? Damned, not again...

Watch him explain the principles of his work.

Arial Adams describes Robbins preference for stealing watches in his article How Quickly A Pickpocket Can Steal Your Watch.

Robbins is working as a consultant, entertainer and speaker and had a show at the Ceasar's Palace in Lay Vegas for four years. He also successfully eliminated a pickpocket problem at Treasure Island.

Here's another amazing routine of Robbins:

Hodinkee tested the Halios 1000M (DLC) aka "The Puck" (Watch Wednesday)

This is an update to my article "The Puck" Is a Nice Budget Watch - Halios 1000M (Watch Wednesday) where I introduced the Puck.

What still makes the watch so interesting for me was the low retail price of just USD $780 / 615 EUR paired with a distinguished design and professional features. Even though I'm not a diver myself, it's nice to know what your watch could serve you.

(c) Halios Watches Ltd.

Felix Scholz of Hodinkee spent a week with the black faced Halios 1000M DLC, also known as "The Puck" on his wrist. I highly recommend you read his full article at Hodinkee including lots of photos.

Here's a summary of his main points:
- Bold and original design aesthetic
- Feels even bigger than the large 47mm case might already suggest
- Felix really liked the DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) finish
- Overall great quality of the components
- Uncluttered dial
- Comfortably to wear despite it's size
- Noisy Bezel
- Case design may prohibit some strap options

Overall, this watch is a joy to wear.
