Steal Like An Artist: Austin Kleon on UX Week 2012

Today I'll start sharing pieces of inspiration  with you. Let it sink infor a while or start taking action today, you decide. Every now and then I'll feature some talks, speeches or other sources of fresh views or approaches to things we do.

During UX Week 2012, Austin Kleon talked about how to embrace your influences, establish a creative lineage, and think of yourself as a mashup of what you let into your life.

Austin Kleon is a writer and artist. He’s the author of the bestselling books Steal Like An Artist and Newspaper Blackout. His work has been featured on 20×200, NPR’s Morning Edition, PBS Newshour and in The Wall Street Journal.

As Austin Kleon says:
When somebody calls something “original,” 9 times out of 10 they just don’t know the sources or references involved. The truth is that nothing is completely original — all creative work builds on what came before.

Use The Movie Lovers Guide To The World To Plan Your Next Journey

If you've run out of ideas where to spend your next vacation here comes a new source of inspiration: The Travelex Movie Lover’s Guide to the World.

Basically it's an interactive map in which you explore the filming locations of the top 250 movies of all time (according to IMDB). Clickable red markers show you filming locations or you can click one of the movies thy have listed to see all of the various locations where they were filmed.

(via Travelex Currency Exchange).

Here's what Travelex says about their app:
The app lets you discover interesting and sometimes surprising facts, such as that Star Wars, Episode IV gathered its stunning foreign-planet backdrops by filming in California, Arizona, Guatemala, the U.K. and in various locations around Tunisia. Other blockbusters that were filmed in Tunisia can be discovered as well using the map, these include Raiders of the Lost Ark and Life of Brian.
Other interesting facts yielded by the app include:
  • A total of 155 locations were used to shoot the top ten movies on IMDB’s list.
  • Among the 155 locations, 63% were filmed in the U.S.A.
  • Out of that number, 39% were filmed in New York.
“The Movie Lover’s Guide offers a fun and unique way to learn more about your favorite movies and hopefully will spark your interest to travel to see those shooting locales in person,” said Jon Dario, president of Travelex Currency Services Inc. “You may have watched The Matrix several times and never realized it was actually partly filmed in Tennessee.

Knowing these facts makes the movies themselves more fun to watch and also showcases the many destinations, including those in our own backyards, that take us to exotic new worlds,” said Dario.

Ken Sirlin Will Never Part With His 1962 Porsche 356 Cabriolet

Ken Sirlin, living in Savannah, Georgia, spend half his life with his 1962 Porsche 356 Cabriolet. He bought the car in 1985 while he was living in Brussels. The previous owner carefully restored the car after finding a perfect donor shell. He applied extensive restoration to put it back in factory conditions.

Instead of keeping it safe from harm, Sirlin decided to use his little 356 in a few classics rallies in Europe, including the Liege-Rome-Liege rally, driving endless miles. Sometime later he packed up the Cabriolet and moved to Georgia to settle down for retirement. Though he no longer races competetively, Ken would never part ways with his Porsche racing partner: He continues to drive the car daily.

Check out the video below for he full story behind the man and his car.

That's Why Porsche Lovers Stay True To Their Cars

Porsche Classic are offering a perfectly reproduced emblem for early Porsche 911 or 356. They put an extraordinary amount of work into creating this badge. The dedication of these guys and the Porsche brand is one of the main reason so many Porsche owners really love their cars, are members of the Porsche Owners Club (US or Europe) or other clubs and stay true to their beloved car for a very long time.

From the Press Release

Such an unmistakeable and sought-after symbol has naturally had a very colourful and sometimes unusual history and been copied many times. To eliminate all doubt, the experts at Porsche Classic delved deep into the history of the crest, which was first suggested as a quality seal for the Type 356 at a meeting between Ferry Porsche and US importer Max Hoffman back in 1952. In the same year, advertising manager Herrmann Lapper and designer Franz Xaver Reimspieß produced a preliminary design that is still used to this day with just a few minor differences in detail. Reimspieß, who is also said to have designed the Volkswagen logo in 1936, sketched a magnificent crest that symbolised the roots of the company as well as the dynamism and quality of its products. At the centre of the golden shield, the horse of the official coat of arms of Stuttgart is depicted along with the name of the city. The composition is surrounded by the red and black state colours and the stylised antlers from the crest of Württemberg-Hohenzollern. The all-encompassing Porsche logo acts as a protective "roof" over all the design elements.

In contrast to the current crest, the Porsche logo on the original crest was only embossed and was not black. In addition, the red elements of the crest were actually more orange in colour to reflect the Württemberg-Hohenzollern state colours. The Classic experts charged with reproducing the crest went a lot further than merely ensuring that the colours were true to the original. The crest is being produced using special tools based on original drawings. The silver and gold plating is being applied using the same technique as the original and the colour and enamelling are being meticulously applied by hand.

The new "old" crest has also had to undergo the same quality tests as the original. This involved the simulation of a stone impact test using a ballistic firing range at the Research and Development Centre in Weissach. The crest also spent 240 hours in the salt spray chamber.

The Porsche crest passed these challenging tests with flying colours, thus proving its credentials as a genuine quality product, 100 per cent made in Germany. This symbol, steeped in history, signals a continued long life for classic Porsche models.

Porsche Guru Magnus Walker Visits Jay Lenos Garage

Porsche Guru Magnus Walker visits Jay Leno's Garage to talk about his Urban Outlaw 1971 Porsche 911T. The car has been modified over the course of a decade to be a lean and mean streetable race car. It happens that Walker uses the car for a sprint to Laguna Seca or Willow Springs for a day at the tracks and then runs back to his home and garage in Los Angeles.

Leno says:
...this car is nicely balanced. You know, so many cars now have almost too much power. But this, you can use all of the power, all the time.

If you haven't seen the fantastic documentary Urban Outlaw yet, go ahead to spend you next half an hour with you motorists heart wide open.
But you can nevertheless start with this 2,4l, 180hp beauty taken to the road by Leno and Walker.

Heroes of Science Action Figures

If only they were real. deviantART user datazoid did go to great length to create this fantastic work. See the picture in full resolution over at deviantART.

Let the man speak for himself:

These little guys took between 40 minutes and 2 hours each, totalling around 50 hours of work.

The figures are all based on Star Trek: TNG and Star Trek: DS9 figures (primarily Odo from DS9, and Picard as Dixon Hill from TNG), and have been heavily modified in Photoshop using Liquify and a great deal of digital painting. Unfortunately, the figures aren’t real. I wish they were.

That's Why MTV Doesn't Play Music Videos Anymore?

You asked, now don't complain about the answer...

Kebu plays Crockett's Theme Live

Watch Sebastian Teir aka Kebu with his live performance of Jan Hammer’s Miami Vice track, Crockett’s Theme.
In the performance, Teir uses only analog synths and vintage sequencers. The video was recorded live at Dynamo, Turku, in May 2012.

Here's what Kebu has to say about this video:

I always liked this tune and was inspired when I heard Michael Cassette's version. So for my live performance I made an arrangement that was influenced by both versions, but put my own twist on it. The tune ended my show in Dynamo, Turku, where this video was recorded. Unfortunately, I only had three camcorders going and the heavy bass drum in the club made the cameras vibrate with each beat. But the feeling was so high in the club that I definitely wanted to upload this particular take!

The song was performed using only analog synthesizers, either played live or sequenced. The performance was recorded line in to one of the cameras. The ambience in the club was recorded using the built-in microphones on two of the remaining cameras and mixed together with the line signal.

Equipment used in this song: Korg Polysix, Poly 61 (through a SansAmp GT2), Mono/Poly, Micro-preset M500; Roland TR-808, Jomox AirBase99, Juno 60, Alpha Juno 1&2; Touched-by-sound DRM1, Oberheim Matrix 6R, Yamaha RM1x (only for MIDI sequencing), Behringer DDX3216, Lexicon MPX500, as well as a midi patchbay and additional preamps for my mixer. Cameras: Canon HF100 (x2) and HF200.

A big thank you to the amazing audience in Turku and to Turku Synth Club for arranging the gig!

007 - License To Spill: The Skyfall Drinking Game

The Suntory Rolling Stones 50th Anniversary Whisky

Imagine you are in The Rolling Stones and want to celebrate your 50th anniversary. What can you do? Getting a nice drink seems to be an obvious choice. That's exactly what the Rolling Stones did in cooperation with legendary Japanese distillers Suntory.
Suntory created a blend containing carefully selected malts distilled and casked according to milestone years throughout the Stones history.
It is a blend of six different whiskeys:
  • 1962 Yamazaki (that has been long-aged in mizunara (Japanese oak) casks since the founding year of the Stones)
  • 1971 Yamazaki
  • 1972 Yamazaki malt
  • Other including 1990s Hakushu malt and Chita grain (when the Stones made their first trip to Japan)

How does it taste?

The weighty, complex aroma reminds of both dried and ripened fruits, and even cacao and espresso. Its rich heaviness and slight bitterness expand in the mouth with a velvety smoothness. The aftertaste is a pleasant and expansive woodiness akin to the fragrance of the finest aloeswood and a soft smokiness.

Where to buy one

The Rolling Stones 50th Anniversary Whisky comes in a commemorative crystal bottle, which are designed around the iconic lips and tongue logo. It features the logo cut in relief on the front of the bottle and a diamond-shaped decorative stopper. The package sits in a stylish box modeled after a black sofa.
The bad thing is only 150 bottles will be produced (each containing 700 milliliters) and will be offered at stellar USD $6,300.

The Athlete Machine is a Rube Goldberg Machine Gone Large

Red Bull doesn't stop to create astonishing videos. This time it's a larger-than-life Rube-Goldberg machine containing top athletes from the Red Bull army.

As they say:
Red Bull Kluge combines complex machinery patched together with the energy and prowess of world-class athletes, to see what happens when physics gets physical.
The video was shot at a former Marine Corps base in Irvine, California and produced by Syyn Labs. The company cofounder Adam Sadowsky directed a 23-person crew of NASA aeronautical engineers, mechanical engineers and former Disney Imagineers. After setting everything up and rehearsing for a month, they shot the video in four hours using a RED camera mounted on a Mercedes SUV. Forty GoPro cameras were used for additional angles and close-ups.

12 athletes, 17 days of construction with over 100 builders and 25 tons of material.

Don't Forget to Watch Rolex Water Resistance Testing

This is just a quick reminder for you to not forget to watch the great and detailed Hodinkee article about Rolex Water Resistance Testing.

Here's the statement from Hodinkees Vimeo page
Rolex dive watches, from the first Submariner to the latest DeepSea Sea Dweller, have always hung their hats (diving helmets?) on watertight cases and screw-down crowns, both Rolex innovations. Given this emphasis, it makes sense that the brand takes water resistance testing very seriously. We took our own Z-series Submariner into a Rolex authorized service center to see just how it’s done.

You may have already heard about the new Jack Daniel's Sinatra Select special bottle. Frank Sinatra was well known as a big supporter of Jack Daniel's and often referred to it as "nectar of gods" during his 40+ year career. He used to giveout a toast on each of his concerts.

The Tennessee whiskey maker pays tribute to this one legacy drinker with a special edition 90-proof bottle. The one-liter bottle includes a specially designed gift box featuring a booklet about the shared history of Jack Daniel’s and Frank Sinatra and a distinct "hat" logo.

The package has been unveiled alongside Frank Sinatra Jr. at TFWA Cannes on October 23rd.

Here's what Sinatra Junior said:
Dad would be very flattered by the association. This fine whiskey, or Old No. 7 as he referred to it, was a favourite part of my father’s life and he loved both sharing it with his friends and introducing it to new acquaintances.

Jim Perry, managing director for Brown-Forman Travel Retail said:
It was common knowledge both within the entertainment industry and in the world of Jack Daniel’s that Frank was one of Jack’s biggest and most loyal fans. All Frank’s children were vocal and encouraging in their endorsement.

How does it taste?

Sinatra Select will be bottled at 45% abv and is matured for longer than the core Jack Daniel’s bottling. Also, it is matured in so-called “Sinatra barrels” – which have carved grooves on their interior to expose the spirit to more wood. The barrels are hand-selected by Master Distiller Jeff Arnett for a fuller flavor and darker color, then mingled with classic Old No. 7 to result in a drink with a smooth, bold character. It's the first time Jack Daniel's is using this method as the main component of a blend. The goal is to get a faster-maturing whiskey with more noticeable spicy and smoky flavours and a richer character.

Where and when can I buy Jack Daniel's Sinatra Select?

The “ultra-premium” line extension is exclusive to travel retail. It is set to be available via Duty Free Shops, starting with the Las Vegas Airport in December. The suggested retail price will be 150 US$ (~115 EUR). It will then be rolled out to multiple airport locations around the world in January, targeting about 200 airports in total. It will also be available from the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee in 2013 and will eventually be sold in domestic markets, too.

“The year 2015 will be Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday", said Jim Perry. "Over the next couple of years, we’ll be building up to that moment. This is the first ever global launch for a Jack Daniel’s product, and the first time we’ve launched any product or any brand in multiple markets at the same time.”, he added.

Triple Destilled Milagro Tequila

Over the last two decades Tequila has evolved into a serious drink and catched up with wodka. So it is no surprise new labels and new variations of the well known drink appear. It's been a long way since the first Tequila has been destilled in the 16th century.

Along with pure lifestyle labels that don't add much to the taste, every now and then a real brand gets in the public eye. This is where Milagro Tequila belongs.

Founded by two friends Danny and Moy, the goa was to create a better modern ambassador of Mexico and to create the best Tequila in the world.

There is much love to every detail of the process, from the agave plants to the destillery to the hand-painted bottles. They achieve their special taste through a triple destilation process.

And of course so much love gets noticed. They already collected an impressive list of Gold Medals in some competitions.

The guys over at coolhunting.com got invited for a personal tour of the company. Read their story and check out www.milagrotequila.com for more information.
